“The Gap: Why We Know Truth… But Don’t Live It”
Matthew 16:18–19
WELCOME
WELCOME
Good evening, family.
Welcome to Rooted Nights.
These nights are not about just hearing something good…
They’re about becoming something solid.
Because you can hear truth for years…
and still not be rooted in it.
And when life gets difficult,
you don’t fall back on what you heard…
You fall back on what you’ve actually built your life on.
So tonight is not about more information.
It’s about alignment.
OPENING PRAYER
OPENING PRAYER
Father,
We don’t just want to hear Your Word tonight…
We want to understand it.
And more than that — we want to see where our lives don’t line up with it.
Not so we feel condemned…
But so we can grow.
Give us clarity.
Give us honesty.
And give us a willingness to change.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
HOOK
HOOK
Let me ask you something — and I want you to really think about it.
What is the difference between knowing something… and living it?
(Pause)
Because most of us know a lot.
We know we should forgive.
We know we should trust God.
We know we should be consistent.
We know we should have faith.
But knowing hasn’t automatically changed us.
So let me ask it differently:
Why is it that we can sit in environments like this…
agree with everything we hear…
and still go back to the same patterns?
(Pause — let it sit)
That’s not a lack of intelligence.
That’s not even a lack of desire.
That’s a gap.
A gap between what we know
and how we actually live.
And if we’re honest…
That gap can be frustrating.
Because part of you knows what’s right…
But another part of you keeps defaulting to what’s familiar.
So tonight is not about learning something new.
It’s about understanding why we don’t always live what we already know.

READ THE TEXT (2–3 min)
Let’s ground ourselves in what Jesus said.
Matthew 16:18
“I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.”
Jesus describes a church that is:
Stable
Strong
Advancing
Unstoppable
So here’s the tension:
If that’s what Jesus is building…
why don’t we always experience that in our lives?
That’s what we’re unpacking tonight.
1. WE CONFUSE AGREEMENT WITH TRANSFORMATION
1. WE CONFUSE AGREEMENT WITH TRANSFORMATION
James 1:22
“Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”
Notice the word:
Deceiving
That means it’s possible to think you’re growing…
when you’re not.
Slow this down
Slow this down
Agreement feels like growth.
You hear something and think:
“That’s good.”
“That’s true.”
“I needed that.”
And in that moment… it feels like something changed.
But nothing actually changed.
Because agreement is not transformation.
Interactive moment
Interactive moment
Have you ever heard something that made sense…
but didn’t actually change your behavior?
(Pause)
That’s the gap.
Make it land
Make it land
Transformation doesn’t happen when you agree.
It happens when you practice.
Truth has to move from:
your ears
to your mind
to your decisions
to your habits
Otherwise, it stays information.
2. WE LIVE IN TWO WORLDS
2. WE LIVE IN TWO WORLDS
Here’s another reason for the gap.
We’ve learned how to be one person in church…
and another person in real life.
Not intentionally.
But over time, we separate the two.
So we think:
“This is where I experience God…”
And then:
“This is where I deal with real life…”
Interactive question
Interactive question
Have you ever felt spiritually strong in a moment…
but struggled hours later?
(Pause)
That’s not because God disappeared.
It’s because we never learned how to live from that place.
Bring Scripture
Bring Scripture
Colossians 1:13
“He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son.”
That means:
You don’t visit the Kingdom.
You live in it now.
So there is no “church version of you”…
and “real life version of you”.
There is just you…
living under a different authority.
Make it practical
Make it practical
So your faith is not just for:
when you pray
when you read
when you gather
It’s for:
how you respond under pressure
how you handle conflict
how you make decisions
how you treat people
That’s where the Kingdom shows up.
3. WE TRUST OUR FEELINGS MORE THAN TRUTH
3. WE TRUST OUR FEELINGS MORE THAN TRUTH
This is one of the biggest struggles.
We don’t just think…
we feel.
And feelings are powerful.
Interactive moment
Interactive moment
Have you ever known what was right…
but didn’t feel like doing it?
(Pause)
That’s the tension.
Because feelings say:
“Protect yourself.”
“Hold onto that.”
“You deserve this.”
But truth says:
“Forgive.”
“Trust God.”
“Let go.”
Slow it down
Slow it down
Growth is not when feelings disappear.
Growth is when truth leads anyway.
Make it real
Make it real
You may still feel offended…
…but choose forgiveness.
You may still feel anxious…
…but choose trust.
That’s where transformation actually happens.
Because you’re no longer led by what you feel…
You’re anchored in what is true.
4. WE TRY TO FOLLOW GOD ALONE
4. WE TRY TO FOLLOW GOD ALONE
This was never meant to be individual.
This was never meant to be individual.
1 Peter 2:5
“You also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house…”
Stones don’t stand alone.
They are built together.
Interactive question
Interactive question
What happens when you isolate yourself?
(Pause)
You lose perspective.
You lose consistency.
You drift.
Because growth requires connection.
That’s why the church isn’t just a gathering…
It’s a structure.
We strengthen each other.
We remind each other.
We stay aligned together.
5. WE AIM TO SURVIVE INSTEAD OF ADVANCE
5. WE AIM TO SURVIVE INSTEAD OF ADVANCE
Jesus said:
“I will build My church…”
That is forward movement.
But many believers live like:
“Let me just get through this week.”
Interactive question
Interactive question
Does your faith feel like something you’re trying to protect…
or something that’s moving forward?
Because those are two different mindsets.
Survival says:
“Let me avoid problems.”
Kingdom mindset says:
“I carry something into situations.”
Make it real
Make it real
You don’t just survive your environment.
You influence it.
Because the church is not meant to shrink back.
It’s meant to move forward.
6. BRINGING IT TO THE HEART
6. BRINGING IT TO THE HEART
So here’s the reality:
We don’t lack truth.
We lack consistency in living it.
And that’s the gap.
Not because we don’t care.
Not because we don’t believe.
But because we haven’t fully aligned
our thinking, our habits, and our lives with what we know.
CLOSING
CLOSING
So tonight, don’t ask:
So tonight, don’t ask:
“Did I learn something new?”
Ask:
“Where is the gap in my life?”
Where do I:
Know what’s right…
but don’t follow through?
Where have I:
Heard truth…
but not practiced it?
Where am I:
Living by feeling…
instead of truth?
(Pause — let it sit)
Because the goal is not just to know truth.
The goal is to become people who live it.
And when that happens…
Church is no longer something you attend.
It becomes who you are.
And that’s when things begin to change.
Not just in moments…
But in everyday life.
